A Message From the Dean
Fall 2009
Welcome to the College of Extended Learning! In these tough economic times, education remains the biggest asset to advancement and the College of Extended Learning can help you improve your marketable skills.
With these challenges come opportunities. Federal stimulus funds may be available to many unemployed Riverside and San Bernardino county residents for job training in high-demand occupations. To find out if you are eligible for assistance, contact a California Employment Development Department (EDD) One-Stop Career Center near you. A list of centers is available at http://www.edd.ca.gov/ or call (877) 872-5627.
The federal stimulus package also brings increased grant writing opportunities for public sector and non-profit organizations. Grant writers can hone their skills and gain a competitive edge by enrolling in our Grant Development and Management certificate program. This highly regarded program is taught by experts in the field of grant funding.
New this fall, the College of Extended Learning has partnered with San Diego State University to offer three online green industry certificate programs: Green Building Construction, Green Energy Management and Sustainable Practices. Driven by increasing interest in sustainability and the move toward stricter governmental regulation, the green industries are poised for major growth. Be ready!
This fall, our International Extension Programs office will be host to more than 40 students from Yasuda University in Hiroshima, Japan, who will be studying English language, culture and literature through our long-standing partnership program. They will also visit Los Angeles, San Diego, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and San Francisco. The students will stay with local host families and attend intensive English classes at CSUSB. The combination of living with an American family while studying at the university gives them a rare opportunity to learn about American culture in conjunction with improving their English language skills. Through an agreement that began last year, we will continue to receive students from Bahçesehir University in Istanbul, Turkey, who come for eight months to study in our American Culture and Language Program.
Because of the ever-growing importance of China and the need to understand its culture and language, the College is offering two new personal enrichment classes: “Introduction to China” and “Mandarin for Kids”. Research shows that the study of foreign languages should begin before the age of 13, so take advantage of this opportunity to introduce your young ones to a foreign language and open up the world for them.
