A Message From the Dean
Winter 2009
Welcome to the College of Extended Learning and the winter quarter 2009. As you set professional and personal goals and resolutions for the new year, the College of Extended Learning invites you to explore a rich array of programs and courses that might help you achieve these goals. You might try a university or extension course to explore a new field, take professional development courses to excel at work or perhaps earn a certificate that will open new opportunities for your future. Our flexible class schedule and varied delivery format allows you to achieve your goals even if you have a tight schedule.
We offer a wide range of programs for your professional advancement, academic development and personal enrichment. With the first decade of the twenty-first century coming to a close, our world continues to change with ever-increasing speed and so do the needs for professional skills. It is estimated that many of today’s college graduates will not work in the field of their major study and that many future employment fields do not even exist today, so the need for retraining and for acquiring new skills and knowledge is ever more pressing. The College of Extended Learning is the place where you can learn new skills that will allow you to adjust to the demands of the changing environment.
The global and interdependent nature of today’s world is reflected in almost every aspect of our lives, and the College of Extended Learning is working more than ever to expand its reach to many nations and many corners of the world and to bring international students and professionals to our campus. Our International Extension Programs, including the American Culture and Language Program, have experienced robust growth, with more international students and professionals participating in our diverse offerings than ever before.
Personal growth and enrichment is another area where the College of Extended Learning can help you achieve your goals. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute continues to add value to Osher membership and has initiated a "Tell a Friend, Bring a Friend" campaign, weekly guest memberships and new partnerships within and beyond the community. Consequently, membership continues to expand toward the next major milestone goal of 1,000 members.
We serve the most diverse student body, from young people who want to explore university courses to professionals and mature adults who look for opportunities for career advancement or to enrich their personal lives. The College of Extended Learning is here to help.
We wish you fulfillment of all your dreams and goals in the coming year!
Sincerely,

Dr. Tatiana Karmanova, Acting Dean
